Fancy must have heard Fletcher’s voice because her whimpering became yips again. But not yips of pain. Yips of excitement.

The puppy had fallen hard for Fletcher.

Kiki had to make sure the dog was the only one who fell for him. Not her.

She couldn’t stop shaking, but it wasn’t with cold. She’d been so scared when he hadn’t surfaced from the water. She’d known it was him when she’d heard that splash. Him who’d come clomping so loudly down the dock in the boots that had probably nearly killed him.

But he was strong. He’d fought his way to the surface again. And now he rushed inside the houseboat.

Fancy’s yips got louder when he opened the bathroom door. And when Kiki joined them inside, she found him running his hands over the little dog as if checking her for injuries like his sister, the vet, would have.

His genuine concern for the puppy got under Kiki’s skin in the best possible way. As if he wasn’t hard enough to resist with the way his wet clothes had molded against his muscular body.

With the way his slick hair highlighted all those chiseled features of his handsome face...

“I think she’s okay,” he said. “She’s not flinching or pulling away from me.”

That was because the dog was smart. She liked those big hands of his moving over her little furry body. And suddenly Kiki was very jealous of the puppy. She wanted those big hands of his moving over her body. But she wanted to be naked. And she wanted him naked, too.

“I’m glad she’s okay,” Kiki said.

“That’s why you screamed,” Fletcher said. “Because you were worried he was going to hurt her?”

She nodded. “But I don’t want to talk about Troy right now,” she said. She didn’t want to talk at all. “You need to get out of those wet clothes.”

Maybe he’d picked up on the huskiness in her voice as the desire she felt for him grew, because he tensed and met her gaze. His green eyes darkened as his pupils dilated. “Kiki...” he murmured, and his voice was even raspier than hers.

And Fancy wriggled down from him to go over to the couch and sniff at it before dropping down on it, her head on her paws as if exhausted.

Maybe she was.

Kiki should have been, too, but adrenaline still coursed through her body, making her tremble. “Is this what you think is a bad idea?” she asked, referring to that comment he’d made on the dock but hadn’t expounded on.

He clenched his jaw so tightly that a muscle twitched in his cheek. Then he sighed. “I shouldn’t have involved you in this investigation. I shouldn’t have put you in danger.”

“You didn’t,” she said.

“But Troy—”

“Is my assistant,” she reminded him. “I know you think he’s the Slasher, too, but I can’t imagine...” She shook her head. “I don’t want to talk about Troy. And everything else that happened would have happened whether you were there or not. You didn’t put me in danger.
